About

The Bruce Brown Memorial Scholarship was established in November of 2011. This scholarship is completely non-profit and is intended only for the purpose of providing some financial support for graduating high school French horn students.

Bruce Brown had a love for music since his early childhood and particularly for the French horn. Bruce played in the McAllen High School band until 1968, when he moved to the Houston area and joined the South Houston High School Band. In his sophomore year, Bruce won the All-State award for his French horn performance, and in his senior year, he earned first chair overall in the All-State Band. After high school, Bruce received a BA in Music Education from the University of Houston and went on to become the assistant band director at South Houston High School before changing careers in 1980.

Bruce’s passion for music was as inspiring as his patience while teaching it. Although he changed careers, Bruce continued to tutor throughout his life. He was also a member of the Sagemont Church Orchestra for more than 20 years.

In April 2010, Bruce was diagnosed with a stage four Glioblastoma. He battled courageously for 18 months. On November 7, 2011, God called Bruce home. It is the wish of his beloved wife, Debbie Brown, and his three sons; Aaron, Brandon and Stephen, to honor his memory and his love for music. This foundation is meant to serve that purpose.
